
Specialty treatment centers in Sri Lanka – National Cancer Institute, Maharagama
The National Cancer Institute (Apeksha Hospital/ (NCI) is the leading hospital under the Ministry of Health. The NCI offers both the diagnostic facilities necessary for the identification of all types of cancer, and specialized care in surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A team of expert Consultants manage the hospital services alongside medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical physicists, laboratory technicians and minor workers. Anyone can access the services, free of charge. In addition to delivering quality care services the NCI is the major training center for medical undergraduates and postgraduates of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM). The National Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka provides its services to over 60,000 inward patients which include more than 14,000 new registrations annually coming from various areas of the country. Out of these new registrations approximately 10,000 are identified as malignant. They are being managed with specialized treatment and follow up care. In 2019 NCI had 69,000+ admissions, 260000+ clinic visits and 11,000+ surgeries performed.
